Local SEO for clinics in India: the complete Google Business Profile playbook
For most clinics, the local pack is the single highest-return organic channel — and it rewards a small set of signals you fully control. Here’s the complete playbook.
When a patient in India types “dermatologist near me,” “best dentist in Indiranagar,” or “IVF centre in Bandra,” the three results in the map block at the top of the page — the local pack — capture the overwhelming majority of clicks. These patients aren’t browsing. They have intent, and they will book one of those three clinics. Winning a local-pack slot means capturing that intent for free, every single day. Losing it means paying for the same patient through ads, or not getting them at all.
The good news for clinic owners: local ranking isn’t mysterious. Google’s local algorithm rewards three things — relevance, distance, and prominence — and two of those are entirely within your control. This is the complete playbook for the parts you can actually influence.
How the local pack actually ranks
Google ranks local results on three factors:
- Relevance — how well your profile matches what the patient searched. Driven by your categories, services, and the content on your profile and website.
- Distance — how close you are to the searcher. Largely outside your control (you can’t move the clinic), which is why nobody can honestly guarantee a number-one ranking.
- Prominence — how well-known and trusted you are. Driven by reviews, citations, your website’s authority, and engagement signals.
Because distance is fixed, your entire local SEO effort comes down to maximising relevance and prominence. Almost every clinic in our marketing audit is leaving easy points on the table in both.
Step 1: Get your Google Business Profile to genuine completeness
Most clinic profiles we audit score under 70% on completeness. Each gap is a relevance signal you’re not sending. Work through every field:
Categories
Set the most specific primary category that matches your core service (“Dermatologist,” “Dental implants provider,” “Fertility clinic” — not the generic “Doctor”). Add relevant secondary categories for your other services. Categories are one of the strongest relevance signals, and getting the primary wrong quietly caps your ranking.
Services
This is the single fastest relevance win we find — and almost no clinic has done it properly. Populate the services section with your actual treatment menu, using the words patients search: “acne scar treatment,” “dental implants,” “IUI,” “PRP for hair loss.” Each service entry, with a short description, tells Google precisely what you treat.
The “from the business” description
Write 600–750 characters describing your clinic, specialisms, and the conditions you treat — for patients first, with natural keywords second. Don’t stuff; describe.
Attributes, Q&A, and products
Set every applicable attribute (wheelchair access, online appointments, languages spoken). Seed the Q&A section with the real questions patients ask and answer them yourself — an empty Q&A is a missed relevance and trust signal. Use the products/services tiles where they fit your specialism.
A critical compliance note
Never keyword-stuff your business name (e.g., “Dr X — Best Dermatologist in Delhi”). Using anything other than your real-world clinic name is a guideline violation that gets profiles suspended. Win on legitimate signals, not risky shortcuts.
Step 2: Build review velocity (the right way)
Reviews are the heaviest prominence signal and one of the most persuasive things a patient reads before booking, which is why a deliberate reviews and reputation system sits at the centre of local SEO. But it’s not your total review count that matters most — it’s the velocity, the steady rate of recent reviews. A clinic adding four genuine reviews a month will often out-rank one sitting on 200 old reviews with nothing recent.
The system that works, and that your front desk can actually run:
- Identify the moment — just after a positive outcome or a happy consultation.
- Ask on the right channel — usually a WhatsApp message from the front desk, which patients in India open far more reliably than email.
- Remove all friction — send a direct, one-tap link straight to your Google review form. Every extra step loses reviews.
Two hard rules: never buy or incentivise reviews (it violates Google policy, is detectable, and carries legal risk under India’s consumer-protection rules), and respond to reviews — graciously to the positive, and calmly and humanly to the critical. A thoughtful response to a negative review often builds more trust than the review cost you.
Step 3: Keep photos and posts fresh
Google rewards fresh visual content, and patients judge a clinic on its photos before they read a word. A profile whose newest photo is a year old reads as neglected. Establish a weekly cadence: a few new photos (the clinic, the team, the equipment — never anything that breaches patient privacy) and a Google Post (a treatment highlight, a patient-education tip, a seasonal note). Most clinics lose local-pack position not to a better competitor but to a more active one two streets away.
Step 4: Fix your citations (NAP consistency)
A citation is any mention of your clinic’s Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) across the web — Practo, Justdial, Sulekha, specialty directories, Apple Maps, Bing. Google cross-checks these for consistency as a prominence signal. The common failure: the clinic is listed as “Dr X Skin Clinic” on Google, “Dr X Dermatology” on Practo, and an old phone number on Justdial. Each inconsistency erodes trust.
Audit every place your clinic appears, fix the inconsistencies so NAP is identical everywhere, and fill the gaps on the directories that matter in your city and specialism. In India, Practo and Justdial still drive real enquiries in many specialisms — don’t neglect them.
Step 5: Support it from your website
Local ranking isn’t only the profile. Your website’s design relevance and authority feed prominence too. Make sure you have:
- Location and contact details in consistent NAP format, ideally with LocalBusiness structured data.
- Treatment pages that match the services on your profile, written to answer real patient questions.
- Genuinely fast mobile load — most clinical local search in India happens on mid-range phones over patchy connections, and speed affects both ranking and conversion.
What “good” looks like after 90 days
Local SEO compounds; it doesn’t spike. A realistic trajectory for a clinic that does the above consistently:
- Weeks 1–4: profile rebuilt to completeness, citations corrected, review system live, weekly cadence started.
- Days 60–90: local-pack position begins moving for priority terms; review velocity visibly improved; the profile looks active and trustworthy.
- Months 4–6: meaningful position gains for your priority terms, and a profile that does real, free acquisition work every day.
The clinics that win the local pack aren’t lucky. They’re consistent — and most of their competitors simply aren’t.
