Why we charge for the audit (and stopped doing free strategy calls)

A free strategy call is a sales pitch dressed as advice. A paid audit is a deliverable you can act on whether or not you ever work with us. Here’s the reasoning.

Almost every marketing agency offers a “free strategy call.” We used to as well. We stopped years ago, and replaced it with a paid audit. Clinic owners sometimes ask why — so here’s the honest reasoning.

What a free strategy call actually is

You and I both know what a free strategy call usually is: a thirty-minute sales pitch dressed up as advice. The agency asks a few questions, offers a couple of generic observations to establish credibility, and then spends the back half steering toward a retainer. The “strategy” is a hook. There’s nothing wrong with selling — but calling a sales call “free advice” is a small dishonesty, and it sets the relationship off on the wrong foot.

It also produces shallow work by design. Nobody does fifteen hours of genuine analysis to give it away on a call, so the free version is necessarily thin: surface-level observations, no real diagnosis, no document you can act on.

What the audit is instead

The PatientFlow Audit is a deliverable. It’s a 25–40 page written report and a 90-minute walkthrough, covering eight areas of your clinic’s patient acquisition, benchmarked against two or three local competitors, with a prioritised action list and quantified estimates of where you’re losing patients.

Crucially, it exists independently of any relationship with us. Roughly a third of audit clients go on to work with us. The other two-thirds implement the findings themselves or hand the report to their existing agency — and that’s a completely fine outcome. The audit is the product, not a tripwire to a bigger sale.

Why charging makes it better

There are three reasons charging produces a better outcome for serious clinics:

It funds real depth. Each audit takes fifteen to twenty hours of senior time — mystery enquiries to your clinic, competitor benchmarking, ad-account teardowns, website analysis, written diagnosis. None of it is templated. That depth is only possible because the audit is paid for.

It selects for serious clinics. The doctors who get the most from our marketing for doctors and clinics work are the ones who treat the audit as a real engagement rather than a free consultation. A modest fee filters for exactly those clinics — and means the people in the room are genuinely invested in acting on what we find.

It removes the conflict of interest. Because we’re paid for the diagnosis regardless of what comes next, we have no incentive to manufacture problems that conveniently require our retainer. We can tell you honestly when something is fine, or when you’re not a fit for us at all — and we frequently do.

And it’s effectively free if you work with us

If you go on to engage us on a retainer within 30 days, the full ₹12,500 is credited toward your first month. So for clinics that work with us, the audit is effectively free — and for those that don’t, it’s a fair price for a genuinely useful deliverable they keep.

That’s the whole logic. We’d rather charge a fair price for real work than give away a shallow pitch for free.
